Heat treat researchers and engineers at the Center for Heat Treating Excellence (CHTE), which is an alliance between the industrial sector and university researchers, work on solving heat treating and thermal processing challenges. The CHTE team consists of pioneers in thermal processing and thermal engineering, heat treating process simulation, carburizing, nitriding, quenching, diffusion and residual stress. CHTEs heat treatment and thermal processing areas of expertise include: Austempering Austenitizing Carbonitriding Carburizing Nitriding Tempering Ausforming Quenching Diffusion Nitrocarburizing Process Simulation Residual Stress Members who join benefit from leading-edge research in thermal processing, induction tempering, gas quenching, alloy life extension, additive manufacturing and more. Current research projects include distortion and residual stress, austempering to form bainite, and the heat treatment of additively manufactured parts. CHTE is supported by Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), one of the best technological universities in the country.
