Global Hemp
Founded in 1996 as a retailer, Global Hemp develops innovative technologies for harvesting and refining hemp fiber for use in multiple value added products. Unlike grain and cannabinoids (CBD), fiber is not a turnkey industry. Fiber also requires a significant amount of capital expenditure. As such, Global Hemp has been developing an alternative to traditional harvesting and processing methods. This is necessary as current methods yield inconsistent fiber. Global Hemp Cord has been manufactured in China for over 10 years using cottonized hemp. This is a chemical process that removes non cellulosic components from hemp -- which is a lignocellulosic material -- including pectin, hemicellulose, and lignin. The result is a nearly pure form of cellulose that can be spun on modern equipment. The waste water is treated, and therefore not disposed of inproperly. While this fiber is weaker than traditional hemp fiber, it's mostly used in crafts, and packaging as an eco-friendly alternative to cotton. This is how come we are able to provide consistently dyed colors, and there is no odor. While the cottonization process has been used by our partner in China, we have been quietly working on an even better process that adheres entirely to the principles of "Green Chemistry." For example, all waste materials, such as lignin, are valorized for use in producing co-products. Furthermore, the company has been developing additional processing methods and value added materials -- especially composites -- for use in building materials, automotive, and other industries. While animal bedding and hemp-lime "hempcrete" are quite popular, we believe the materials we are developing are the high value materials that are necessary for building a new industry.
