As a doctoral candidate at the University of Florida, he designed and fabricated vacuum laser ports using germanium and zinc selenide windows. While investigating thin-film deposition via CO2 laser ablation, under the direction of Samuel O. Colgate, Grant learned that commercial, infrared-transmitting viewports were unavailable. As good experimentalists will do, he and Sam created their own sealed, UHV window assemblies. As a post doc, Grant continued to collaborate with Sam, developing two more hermetically sealed window designs. These were awarded US patents. In 1990, Grant began his industrial career, working first for Insulator Seal. Together with his managers there, Art and Dave Dunton, Grant successfully launched first Flobon and then VacOptix extended-range, sealed optical product lines. In the following years, he worked to advance sealed optical product offerings at both Ceramaseal and MPF Products.
