Wellmans roots can be traced to the General Electric Companys Industrial Heating Department which moved its operation from Schenectady, New York, to Shelbyville, Indiana, in 1955. In 1979, Wellman plc, a British company, purchased the operations from GE and renamed it Wellman Furnaces Inc. In 1988, managers of the Shelbyville facility bought the business and ran the company until 2003, when Precious Technology Group, LLC took over ownership.
